VALLEJO — A section of Interstate 80 that closed in both directions Sunday afternoon during a 150-acre fire at Carquinez Strait has reopened, and an evacuation order for nearby homes has been lifted.The fire on the north side of the strait first broke out near Glen Cove — a primarily residential area of Vallejo on the east side of I-80. The fire then jumped across the freeway, reaching the campus of the California State University Maritime Academy.Within several hours, another fire — dubbed Sky Fire — broke out on the south side of the strait in the hills of Crockett. The flames that broke out near Cummings Skyway and I-80 in northwest Contra Costa County had grown to 150 acres by noon Sunday,Crockett residents who live south of Pomona Street, west of Crockett Boulevard and east of I-80, had been ordered to evacuate by the county’s Fire Protection District around 11 a.m. Sunday before getting the all-clear a little before 1 p.m. Rebekah Wimmer was parked along I-80 at Magazine Street in Vallejo, looking at the empty freeway when it was closed. She told the Bay Area News Group that she was trying to get to Pinole to check on her parents and was worried about fires spreading from Crockett.“They are packing a bag just in case,” Wimmer said.Last night, her home in Novato lost power at about 8:30 p.m. With no estimated time of the reopening of I-80 she said her best route might be to take Highway 37 to Highway 101 and cross the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge into West Contra Costa.I-80 CLOSURE DUE TO FIRE between Hwy-4 & I-780 in Vallejo, including the Carquinez bridge as well, due to the Glen Cove fire in Vallejo.
